Online Mixing

Online Mixing

Mixing is one of the most important steps in the recording process and the difference between an amateur sounding mix and a hard hitting mix that jumps out of the speakers and draws you in can make or break a song.

Whether you recorded the tracks at home recorded them at another studio, we can bring our years of experience and a musicians ear to your music and give you a mix that brings out the essence of your song.

We’ll give you the best of both worlds - digital and analog, by running the mix through our vintage analog SSL 4040 console rather than a completely “in the box” digital mix.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

How Does it Work?

  • Send your tracks to kent@crystalclearsound.net using wetransfer.com or a similar large file transfer service.

  • When you send your files, please provide us with as many mix notes as possible regarding production, mixing effects or if a song needs to be faded out. We require WAV or AIFF files (44.1, 48, 88.2 or 96KHz). These should be bounced/consolidated from 0:00 or bar 1, Beat 1, and all be the same length and the same sample rate.

  • We ask that you please supply multi-track files dry, without reverb or effects. But, if you feel that a specific effect, processing or creative element (filter sweeps, delays etc.) is an integral part of the sound then include that track with effects and also a clearly labelled ‘dry safety’ version without effects so that we have options. The extra version(s) of the tracks won’t count against the track total.

  • Do not send DAW sessions files (Nuendo, Logic, Cubase, Pro Tool, Reaper, etc.) We need just the WAV files exported from your DAW. • Print any MIDI/virtual instrument tracks as audio and export as an audio track.

  • We will use all tracks that you send us unless advised otherwise. It is your responsibility to send tracks that are ready for mixing - meaning the correct takes, crossfades completed within, unwanted noise removed from tracks, etc.

  • Please clearly label tracks (i.e., Kick, Snare, Lead Vocal, Bass, etc.) DO NOT send us tracks just labelled as Audio 1, Audio 2, etc. That will require us to go through and figure out what is what and make it much more time intensive.

  • If you know of specific things you would like us to fix, like timing issues or certain pitch problems, include the exact time and problem of the issues so that we can find those spots. We can definitely do overall pitch correction as part of the mix provided extreme amounts of tuning are not needed. We pride ourselves on the ability to do very transparent pitch correction to ensure a very natural, non-robotic sound - unless that is what you’re going for, in which case, let us know that.

We welcome as much email correspondence prior to sending us your files as you would like. The more information we get from you, the better we’ll be able to give you the mix you need. Once we have your files for mixing, we’ll send you an invoice that can be paid online. Once we have a completed mix, we will send you a WAV file and an MP3 for you to listen to. This file WILL NOT be a mastered file, which means it will not be as loud as a mastered commercially released mix. Please keep this in mind and try to match volumes if you are comparing the mix to other tracks. At this stage we are intensely focused on getting your mix slammin’ and we believe it is best that the mastering is done as a completely separate process.

FREE ROUND OF REVISIONS

Revisions

Once you have received the mix from us, take a listen and live with it for a couple of days. Then, if you would like to make some adjustments, send us a detailed email with the revisions you would like make. As long as it is a reasonable amount of revisions, the first round is free.

What is a revision?

Minor tweaks to elements in the mix such as level adjustments (bring the vocal up, kick drum down, etc.), EQ adjustments (brighten the snare, etc.), adjustment of reverb or effect levels. Large amounts of adjustments or major changes in direction will be charged at the regular hourly rate of $80/hr. Generally, we assume that we can recall the mix and make the revisions, and print new mixes in 30 minutes. If the amount of revisions goes beyond that, then we have to charging for the time. Further rounds of revisions are welcome, but are charged at the hourly rate of $80 per hour. As mentioned, just a handful of minor revisions along with mix recall and new prints of the mix can be completed in 30 minutes or less.
